Architect of Advancion platform will accelerate pace of innovation for the industry
- PRESS RELEASE -
ARLINGTON, VA, March 28, 2019—As energy storage continues its growth as a critical infrastructure technology, Fluence, a joint venture of Siemens and AES, has named power industry veteran Brett Galura as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Formerly the company’s Vice President of Customer Solutions, Galura combines deep experience in digital systems and energy storage with the leadership ability to build and scale highly effective teams. He was a key architect of Fluence’s Advancion platform, one of the most widely deployed battery storage systems across global markets.
“Digital intelligence will be key to our business going forward, as we draw on our extensive datasets collected over 12 years of energy storage operations,” said CEO Stephen Coughlin. “Brett has the vision, the passion and the IT systems and energy industry expertise to accelerate our technology leadership and incorporate data-driven insights to benefit our customers. His work on customer solutions is a big part of the reason we have customers coming back to us for their second, third and fourth storage projects. He will accelerate the pace of innovation, not only at Fluence, but throughout the industry.”
Fluence was recently named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2019 and has been recognized by Navigant as the global leader in utility-scale energy storage solutions and services.
Galura will lead teams in the U.S. and Germany, focused on continuous development of Fluence’s Advancion, Siestorage and SunFlex platforms. His appointment as CTO sets the stage for the next generation of storage technologies that Fluence plans to roll out in the coming months. He will also leverage the company’s relationships with Siemens and AES to further advance its technical capabilities.
“From the beginning of Fluence, we have brought our parent companies' experience of developing energy storage systems tailored to the specific needs of a broad range of customers,” Galura said. “Going forward, we are using everything we have learned from our collective history and investing even more in the core software platform that is the backbone of our system. As we continue to improve the hardware platforms, we are also expanding the features of the software to bring everything together and provide the sophisticated technology our customers need as the grid becomes more complex.”
As Customer Solutions Vice President, Galura led engineering, commissioning, and operational services across all of Fluence’s projects, including:
- Phoenix, Arizona: For Punkin Center, a small town near Phoenix, a 2-MW Fluence battery provided the extra capacity residents needed—without the 20-miles of new wire Arizona Public Service would have had invest in for system expansion.
- Ballarat, Australia: Fluence designed this 30-MW, 30 MWh project to add flexibility to the regional grid in Victoria. The system is capable of powering more than 20,000 homes for an hour of critical peak demand, and can also respond to changing grid needs within milliseconds.
- Rohini, Delhi, India: Fluence partnered with AES, Mitsubishi and Tata Power on this 10-MW project—the first of its kind in India—aimed at opening the energy storage market here and improving power reliability for millions of residents in Delhi.
Prior to joining Fluence, Galura spent more than 20 years with AES Corp., in a variety of roles, including Vice President of Solution Development for AES Energy Storage, Director of Information Technology for Asia and the Middle East, Director of IT Application Development and Market Director for a retail power subsidiary.
Brett Galura is available for interviews. A Q&A with Galura is available on the Fluence blog.
